During the 1980s he experimented endlessly at i-D with devices including polaroid photography, photocopier distortions, layering and mixing of type and image to create apparently random and chaotic 'instant design' solutions. i-D became an important springboard for many young designers and photographers. Jones has also worked in video and television graphics and for the fashion labels Fiorucci and Mexx.

In 1990 he was appointed European art director for Esprit, the San Fransisco fashion company. Editor and designer of A Manual of Graphic Techniques: Instant Design (1990), which reviews twenty years of his design.
